Professor Sushil Kumar Mukherjee DSc, FNA

Professor SK Mukherjee, is the seniormost a Academician of the state. He did his MSc in (Pure) Chemistry and DSc in Physical Chemistry from Calcutta University. He worked with Professor JN Mukherjee and was associated with  the other great scientists of that era, viz., Professor NR Dhar, Sir JC Ghosh and Dr SS Bhatnagar. He subsequently worked with Professor CE Marshall of the University of Missourie at Columbia for 2 years. At this stage, he came in close contact with Professor Linus Pauling, NL. Later he conducted joint Research Projects with another Nobel Laureate, Dr Robert Synge at the Indian Statistical Institute. Professor Mukherjee's academic activities spanned over an wide spectrum, however Physical Chemistry and Soil Science remained his forte all throughout. His achievements and recognitions are stupendous. He is Fellow of a number of Academies including the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, Founder President of West Bengal Academy of Science & Technology and first Indian to be a Honorary Fellow of the International Society of Soil Science. His academic activities are always coupled with social commitments and this singular character brought him close to the two legends, Acharya SN Bose and Megh Nath Saha.
